Kelowna Rockets take game one against Portland in the Western Conference Final

KELOWNA–The Kelowna Rockets have one win under their belt in the Western Conference Final series against the Portland Winterhawks.

The Rockets scored three straight goals in the second period to defeat the Winterhawks 3-2 in the first game of the series.

It didn’t look so good for the Rockets in the first, as the Winterhawks scored just 35 seconds into the game and then managed another at the 18 minute mark of the first period.

The Rockets started the second period with a bit more gas though, and Madison Bowey got a shorthanded goal off the stick of Nick Merkley to make it 2-1 just 98 seconds into the period.

Less than a minute later, Justin Kirkland took a pass from Leon Draisaitl and buried his first goal of the playoffs tie things up 2-2.

With less than five minutes left in the second, Rourke Chartier got a bit of a breakaway and managed a tricky goal to put the Rockets a 3-2 lead they would hold onto for the rest of the game.

The Rockets outshot the Winterhawks 46-32. It’s the fourth time in five years the two teams have met in the Western Conference Final.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at Prospera Place for game 2.
