REGINA – People around the world are commemorating 21 years since the Rwandan genocide, a horrific 100 days in 1994 which took as many as one million lives, mostly members of the Tutsi minority.

In Regina, the Rwandan community marched from the legislature to City Hall Saturday morning.

Many people in attendance had some sort of connection to the genocide, whether they are survivors themselves or have family and friends who are.

Francois Regis Kabahizi was 21-years-old when he survived the genocide.

“It’s a miracle that I’m standing here today,” said Kabahizi, president of the Rwandese Community of Regina.

He said most people should feel some sort of connection to the genocide.

“I do feel that you are also in a way connected to this,” he told reporters. “Even if you’re not physically or emotionally connected, you heard about it and it brought you an impact in your heart.”
