U of L clothing drive giving back to students in unique way

LETHBRIDGE- Student life is filled with stress, studying for exams, finishing assignments and paying bills.

But a group with the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union and the Education Undergraduate Society are doing what they can to relieve some of that stress, one T-shirt, sweater or scarf at a time.

Organizer Alyssa Andreachuk says the money will go to a student studying education at the U of L.

“The student who gets the scholarship is someone in their professional semester three of education, so that means they are doing an entire semester of teaching at a school for four months and that’s hard because they can’t work because they are teaching full time.”

It’s a situation Julia Adolf understands all too well. Trying to balance her hands on learning, while still being able to pay her bills.

“A lot of the time we can’t get out and have our jobs during the day, so our only opportunity is to work during the evenings and a lot of the time that is spent prepping for lessons and marking everything. It’s really important for our students to afford living and food and everything.”

Every item gathered for the clothing drive was donated by fellow students or community members, making sure students who need a helping hand get one.

“Someone who needs financial aid or someone who’s really involved in the Education Undergraduate Society, someone who really deserves it,” adds Andreachuk.

All of the items needed are under seven dollars, making it possible to help even more students like Brenna Scott who can’t afford to spend big bucks on new outfits.

“Eating and groceries is a little more important than that, so you can get some great deals just right here.”

As for how much money the lucky recipient will get, Andreachuk says it all depends on donations and how many sales they make.

“We are hoping to get $500 dollars and once we have $500 dollars, that is enough to give a scholarship and then that person will get it in the fall.”

No matter the amount, she says it’s amazing to see students helping students.
