REGINA – The Province of Saskatchewan has announced a new organization will handle the enforcement of the Animal Protection Act.
The Ministry of Agriculture has reached a two-year funding agreement with Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan and the non-profit will begin the service April 1st.
The province will provide the organization with $610,000 a year for investigative services.
“Animal welfare is a top priority for our government,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with our new partner, Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan, to continue enforcement of the Act and ensure a sound animal welfare system throughout the province.”
Earlier this year the Saskatchewan SPCA announced they would not renew their contract with the province.
Starting April 1st the toll free number to call for reporting animal abuse cases in the province will be 1-844-382-0002, the new website will be animalprotectionservices.ca and their email address is info@animalprotectionservices.ca
The new organization will be based out of Saskatoon and the board will include members from provincial veterinary and livestock organizations.
