TORONTO – Pickering Soccer Club has implemented an All Abilities Soccer program for children and youth.

This inclusive program was founded in 2008 by Franco Taverna and encourages fun and fitness, and promotes skill development, leadership, independence and self-confidence.

The program started with just three children, and now has over 100 participants.

“We don’t advertise, it’s all word of mouth…and every year it just keeps growing,” Taverna said.

Thanks to numerous volunteers, the program offers one-on-one coaching and mentoring by recreational and competitive young players within the club.

“It’s so rewarding knowing that you’ve made a kid’s day and really seeing them develop and grow over time,” said Julia Hagner, a volunteer coach of the All Abilities Soccer program.

Athletes between the ages of three and 18-years-old learn to play the game of soccer while making friends. The program incorporates adaptive equipment to accommodate the diverse needs of each participant.

“Some children are with walkers on the field, some have specialized braces, some have communication difficulties. We’ve been able to develop, source, and purchase a variety of equipment, and adaptive processes,” Taverna said.

One of the most important aspects of this program for the children are the relationships they build with their coaches and teammates.

“We’ll all get to know each other on and on through soccer,” Spiro Kontos, a participant of All Abilities Soccer program, said.
