TORONTO – Rescue workers managed to save a litter of nine puppies from a hole underneath a metal container near the city of Valparaiso, Chile.
Locals say the puppies had been left there by their mother, who dug the hole and then stashed her pups to save them from a raging forest fire.
A Telemundo News report shows the touching moment rescuers found and retrieved the trapped puppies, believed to be about two weeks old.
According to multiple reports, locals saw the devoted mom desperately digging the hole before hiding her litter, and directed rescue workers to their exact location.
The story has captured the attention of the central coastal Chilean city, which has been battling intense forest fires that have killed one and forced thousands more to evacuate their homes.
The Daily Mail reports that over 500 hectares have been burned in the blaze, while 19 firefighters have been injured, five of them seriously.
Numerous Valparaiso residents are volunteering to adopt or help care for the nine pups and their mother, who has been given the name Blacky by locals.
Meanwhile, the story has become a viral video sensation, having been picked up by news agencies around the world and shared numerous times on social media.
A local woman has even donated a doghouse for the surviving puppies.
The dogs are currently being looked after by voluntary veterinarians.
