CALGARY – Police say a man deliberately ran down a woman for the purposes of a sexual assault in a bizarre incident in the city’s southeast.

On March 7, a resident living in the 3900 block of 14th Avenue S.E. called police to say a woman who appeared to be injured had shown up at his doorstep.

The victim told police she was riding her bike in the area when she was hit by a vehicle, knocking her to the ground. She alleges a man in his mid-20s then picked her up and forced her into a small SUV, threatening to sexually assault her. She was able to fight off her attacker and run away.

“Investigators believe this was a deliberate act,” explained Detective Matt Baker at a Tuesday news conference. “[The victim] believes the vehicle followed her for a short distance prior to knocking her to the ground.”

“I think it’s reasonable to suggest under these circumstances that this person does pose a danger to other Calgarians.

“Having said that, this is a very rare incident to occur in what is a safe city.”

Police say the victim didn’t know her attacker.

She remains in hospital in serious but stable condition, suffering from a head injury.

Investigators are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage.

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area around 5 a.m. who may have seen a beige or gold SUV, similar to a Pathfinder or a Land Rover, to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
