SAPPORO, Japan – Canada’s Jennifer Jones trounced the United States 10-2 in eight ends Tuesday to improve to 5-1 at the women’s world curling championship.
The Winnipeg skip defeated U.S. skip Aileen Sormunen in the morning draw and was scheduled to meet Denmark’s Lene Neilsen (2-4) later Tuesday.
The Swiss edged Finland 8-7 to move ahead of Jones, third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McEwen at 6-1 in Sapporo, Japan pending Canada’s later game.

Canada led 2-0 after the opening end, and after the U.S. replied with a single point in the second, Jones tacked on three points in the third. Canada added a deuce in the seventh and three points in the eighth.
In other early games Tuesday, China defeated Scotland 7-5 and Denmark prevailed 9-7 over Germany.
Japan and Russia were behind Canada in the standings at 4-2. China and Germany were next at 4-3, Scotland and Sweden were 3-3, Finland and Denmark were 2-4, the U.S. was 1-6 and Norway was 0-6.
The top four teams at the end of round-robin play will advance to the Page playoffs.

A Canadian team hasn’t won gold at this event since Jones did so in 2008. The five-time national champion made her world championship debut in 2005 and won a silver medal in 2010.
Canada leads all countries with 15 gold medals and 31 podium appearances at the world championship since 1979.
Sweden is next with eight gold and 23 total medals.
