EDMONTON — Groat Road will be closed between 107 Avenue and River Valley Road Monday as work on the 102 Avenue bridge continues.
The road was expected to be open for the Monday morning commute, but the city said Sunday crews were still working to lift the steel girders into place.
Matt Boiko, special projects general supervisor with the City of Edmonton, says crews experienced a bit of trouble placing the first few steel girders in place. Plus, strong winds this weekend delayed work by about 12 hours.
“When winds start to exceed 15 Knots we have to stop the operation for safety purposes. Our number one priority is always the safety of the workers and the public,” said Boiko.
City staff now expect Groat Road to reopen to traffic by 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Suggested detour routes during the closure include:
- Victoria Park Road
- 149 Street to Whitemud Drive
- 109 Street to the High Level Bridge
ETS Route 128 will detour to Victoria Park Road/116 Street/107 Avenue. Extra service will be added on Monday to make up for the delay.
After the girder work is complete, there will be nightly closures on Groat Road. Beginning Tuesday, March 17, the road will be closed from 7:30 p.m. until 6 a.m. for bolt torquing and installation of a temporary bridge deck. The nightly closures will run Tuesday through Friday nights.
The new 102 Avenue bridge is expected to open to traffic in fall 2015.
The city is running a live bridge camera on its website for those who wish to watch a bit of the construction.
