Admission fees possible for new art gallery in Saskatoon

Watch above: Gregory Burke, CEO of Remai Modern Art Galley of Saskatchewan, explains the rationale behind a report going to Saskatoon city council recommending admission fees when the new gallery opens.

SASKATOON – The new Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan wants to charge an admission fee. The proposal is in the gallery’s business plan going before Saskatoon city council on Monday.

The plan proposes a $12.00 admission fee for adults and $10.00 for students and seniors.

That’s a big change from the Mendel Art Gallery, where admission is free but contributions are encouraged.

The gallery says it will offer free admission to the ground floor and have sponsors cover the cost for children. It also plans to offer one free admission night each week.

Officials say the reason behind charging admission is to raise more of their operating revenue and rely on funds from the city less.
