Carly Rae Jepsen releases new song ‘I Really Like You’

Carly Rae Jepsen released her new single on March 1.

TORONTO — Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen released “I Really Like You” on Sunday — a song she really, really, really hopes it will be as successful as her breakthrough hit “Call Me Maybe.”

It’s the first single from the 29-year-old B.C. native’s third album, which is set for release this summer.

During the three-and-a-half-minute song, Jepsen says “really like you” 11 times and the word “really” 67 times.

A forthcoming video for the single, featuring Tom Hanks and Jepsen’s fellow Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, was shot in New York City. (Hanks is a friend of Scooter Braun, who manages both Jepsen and Bieber. The Oscar-winning actor attended Braun’s wedding last July in Whistler.)

“I Really Like You” was co-written and produced by Peter Svensson, who has penned tracks for Ariana Grande and Canada’s Avril Lavigne.

Jepson’s fans seem to really, really, really like what they hear. The song (audio only), posted on Vevo, has been played more than 530,000 times in its first 18 hours of release. (It is currently geo-blocked in Canada.)

On iTunes in Canada, Jepsen’s single had reached No. 18 by Monday night.

Early reviews are mostly positive. The Globe and Mail called the song “ridiculously, absurdly, unbelievably catchy.” Rolling Stone described it as “shimmering” and “seductive.” Billboard called the song “really fun” with an “instantly appealing” hook.

“Call Me Maybe,” released in 2011, went on to become one of the top-selling singles of all time and earned two Grammy nominations. The video for the song has been viewed a staggering 651 million times.
