Team BC hockey kicks off Canada Winter Games with 5-3 win over New Brunswick

Jordy Bellerive scored two goals as Team BC defeated New Brunswick 5-3 in its opening game of the boys’ hockey tournament at the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Bellerive scored the opener in a period that saw his team outshoot New Brunswick by a margin of 13-5. Two minutes after Bellerive’s goal, New Brunswick’s Michael Cyr scored on a 5-on-3 power play.

Bellerive scored again early in the second on a 2-on-1. New Brunswick replied with two goals in the second to take a 3-2 lead heading into the final stanza.

In the third, Connor McDonald and Jarret Tyszka helped give Team BC the win.

Elsewhere in the boys’ hockey competition, Newfoundland & Labrador beat Northwest Territories 11-0, Alberta defeated Saskatchewan 4-1, Ontario beat Manitoba 5-3, Quebec easily handled Nova Scotia 6-1, and PEI crushed Yukon 13-0.

Team BC hopes to earn its second consecutive gold, having won it all at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax.
