REGINA – Canadian municipalities have been voicing their support for holding a national inquiry into murdered and missing women and now Regina’s city council is speaking up.

The initiative follows the lead of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association. On February 3, delegates voted in favour of an inquiry.

Mayor Michael Fougere said Regina city councillors are in favour of an inquiry or round table into missing and murdered Indigenous women.

“We’re talking a round table inquiry of some kind to get this on the public agenda as a priority at the national level. We have many First Nations and Aboriginal people in our community and they’ve been calling for this. We feel the voice of those people should be heard by city council.”

The motion submitted by Fougere and the councillors will be tabled at Monday’s city council meeting.
