KELOWNA — An agreement to swap land with the Westbank First Nation was made back in 2009 and now it’s payback time for the BC government.
The first nation gave reserve land to the province to build the Westside Road Interchange. In exchange, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure promised replacement land and the two sides have been negotiating ever since.
The package being offered includes $1.5 million dollars for future land purchases and four parcels of land. Two private agricultural properties within the City of Kelowna on Spiers Road and Hereron Road and one crown land parcel east of Kelowna along McCulloch Road adjacent to land held by Westbank First Nation at Medicine Hill, along with one private property on the eastern shores of Lower Arrow Lake near Fauquier.
Other projects completed under the agreement include the W.R. Bennett Bridge, and the Sneena Overpass.
