DARTMOUTH – Halifax Police have a bag of money they want to give away. But first you have to prove it’s yours or belongs to your family. Police have no idea who the rightful owner may be.

An employee of Value Village Thrift Store in Dartmouth found a large sum of money Monday while sifting through a donation of drapes. Company policy is to contact police on such matters.

“We were able to determine what we have in these envelopes that that money was taken out from a Guysborough County bank in 2006,” says Constable Pierre Bourdages, of Halifax Police.

Police know which bank the money was withdrawn from, but little else, says Cst. Bourdages. “Given the time that has passed and limited information we have, we were not able to trace down the owner of the account.

Police have a theory of what may have happened. “It does appear that someone just took that money out, put it somewhere in their house for either rainy days or other reasons, and either forgot about it or the individual passed away and a family member would have donated without realizing there was money inside the drapes,” says Cst. Bourdages.

He says police know the drapes were donated in January of this year.

Thousands of dollars was contained in several envelopes within the drapes. If the money belongs to you or a family member, you should contact police soon. “If after 90 days there is no claim or nobody comes forward the finder can claim that money back from police,” says Cst. Bourdages.
