Man paying bail for a friend accidentally gives police bag of cocaine

TORONTO – A Michigan man paying bail for a friend made a rather shocking mistake this past Saturday when police discovered he’d handed them a bag of cocaine along with the bail money.

Fifty-one-year-old Royal Norton went into a Clinton Township, Michigan police station Saturday to post bail for a friend, arrested on an intoxicated driving charge.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Norton handed over three $100 bills to cover the bail when the desk officer noticed the bag between two of the bills.

Norton said the bag was garbage, but police had their suspicions and had the substance tested.

Once it came back positive for cocaine, police arrested Norton for possession – ironically, right next to a poster advertising a drug tip line.

As for the friend Norton had come to bail out, police actually accepted the money and released said friend, even as they were putting the cuffs on Norton.
