TORONTO — Seattle Seahawks player Jon Ryan sparked a Twitter frenzy Sunday night when, during player introductions at the Super Bowl, he gave a shout-out to his alma mater, the University of Regina.

Cue the giggles — and accusations that Ryan was being cheeky.

Turns out, many Americans (and viewers around the world) interpreted “Regina” as a place, well, somewhere a little further south.

The 33-year-old Seahawks punter was born and raised in Regina and played for the University of Regina Rams before joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Confusion over the name of Ryan’s school had many Americans turning to Google.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Of course, it didn’t take long for Canadians to go on Twitter and educate the rest of the world about Regina. Some had a sense of humour about it.
