A winter storm warning has been issued by Environment Canada for much of southern Ontario. A developing storm south of the border dubbed “Linus” is expected to make its way through the southern part of the province bringing snow and a biting wind.

Hazardous winter conditions are expected to hit Windsor through to the Durham region and north to Huron and Perth counties.

The agency says total snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are likely for areas south of a line from Sarnia toward Hamilton. The highest amount of precipitation is expected near the Great Lakes. Areas farther north and toward the GTA could see up to 15 cm of snow. Conditions are expected to be most severe Sunday night.

It’s possible the storm could track farther north, affecting additional areas.

A special weather statement is also in effect for eastern Ontario; Cobourg to the Kingston area can expect 5 to 10 cm of snow.

Travel may be a challenge as gusty winds are also expected and blowing snow may cause reduced visibility into Monday morning. Wind chills are forecast to hover in the -25 C range.

The storm has already blanketed parts of the U.S., causing thousands of flights to be delayed or cancelled. More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport alone.
