TINY TOWNSHIP, Ont. – A 32-year-old man made a narrow escape after his snowmobile plunged through thin ice on a bay in central Ontario.

Provincial police say it happened on New Year’s Day in Penetanguishene Bay in Tiny Township.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Emergency workers who responded to a call about the incident searched the ice surface for the snowmobile driver.

But police say the man – who is from the Owen Sound area – was later found warming up in a vehicle on a nearby trail.

Police say the man is lucky to have survived after plunging into the icy waters without a floater snowmobile suit.

His 2014 900 Arctic Cat snowmobile remains at the bottom of the bay.
