Death of 4-year-old in Erin Woods now a homicide

CALGARY – Police say the death of a four-year-old girl in the community of Erin Woods last year is now considered a homicide.

Emergency crews were called to a home in the 0-100 block of Erin Ridge Road S.E. on Friday, December 19th for reports of a child in distress.

When they arrived, paramedics found a child in cardiac arrest. They rushed her to hospital, but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Initially, police classified Olive Rebekah Oluwafemi’s death as suspicious. However on Friday, police confirmed they are now investigating it as a homicide.

Investigators believe the injuries that caused Olive’s death were inflicted within the family home, and don’t’ think they were the result of an accident or play.

“When the call initially came in, there were reports that she likely choked,” explained S/Sgt. Colin Chisholm. “We now know that, that was not the case.”

At this time, the child’s cause of death is not being released.

The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit has interviewed both of Olive’s parents, but haven’t laid any charges.

“These are very complex investigations, and they require many steps to be undertaken before results are known, both on a medical and an investigative perspective,” added S/Sgt. Chisholm.

Olive was an only child, and police say there were no members of their extended family staying with them at the time, nor are they aware of any visitors to the house.
