It’s a father’s worst nightmare.
A fire chief in the Okanagan responded to an accident on Highway 33 – only to discover his daughter had died in the crash.
Alexandra Nyuli, 21, of Joe Rich died yesterday when the vehicle she was driving went down an embankment east of Kelowna, two kilometres past the Eight Mile hairpin. Her father, Joe Rich Fire Department Chief Curtis Nyuli, was one of the first people on scene.
“I just want people to remember her for who she was. She played triple-A midget hockey all her life,” says Nyuli. “She shook hands with Hayley Wickenheiser.”
Nyuli was one of the first responders to arrive at the crash scene after another volunteer fire fighter noticed the tire tracks crossing his laneway – leading to the edge of the steep embankment.

Nyuli says he’s not sure why his daughter’s vehicle left the road. She was on her way into Kelowna from her home in Joe Rich. There was heavy fog in the area at the time. It isn’t yet known what caused the crash and Nyuli says he’s waiting for the coroner’s report, but suspects his daughter either fell asleep or was distracted.
