Cost of groceries on the rise, according to Stats Canada

WINNIPEG — Food prices continue to rise, and they have been higher over the last couple of months as the dollar drops even lower according to Stats Canada. Overall, grocery prices were up about three per cent from last year. Consumers and local grocery store owners are noticing the increase most in meat and produce.

“We expect a bit of an increase because of weather conditions, but its been way past some of the levels we’ve seen before,” said Munther Zeid from Foodfare. Shoppers told Global News that they have been scaling back on what they’ve been buying.

Much of the produce and meat is purchased from American suppliers, where the tumbling Canadian dollar doesn’t go as far as it used to.

“Costs alone have gone up over 20 per cent if not more, some of them even 30 per cent from a year ago,” said Zeid. Zeid said beef has been notably higher.
