WATCH: Salmon Arm school aims to prevent future bomb scares

SALMON ARM – Shuswap Middle School held a large assembly Wednesday morning to try to prevent future bomb scares after false threats caused two evacuations at the school.

“The purpose of the assembly today was to really have students understand what the impacts are in order to prevent that kind of thing from happening again,” says School District 83 Superintendent of Schools Glenn Borthistle.

Students heard about the far ranging impacts of bomb threats on school operations, staff and first responders.

For the second time in just over a month, students were evacuated Tuesday from Shuswap Middle School because of a false bomb threat.

“There was some writing on a bathroom wall that was indicating there was a bomb within the building,” says RCMP spokesperson Kris Clark. “Through the course of our investigation we were able to determine that this was a false report and were able to identify a suspect.”

Police say a student admitted to writing the threat.

Who was behind a similar bomb threat at the same school in December remains a mystery to school officials.

“My experience is that these things can happen at different schools from time to time,” says Borthistle. “You get one incident and then someone thinks it is kind of a neat thing to copy cat.”

No criminal charges are expected. The school district says it will follow its disciplinary procedures when dealing with the student who admitted making the threat.
