WINNIPEG – Winnipeg’s mayor will recommend extending the suspension of the city’s top bureaucrat for another 30 days.

Brian Bowman suspended acting Chief Administrative Officer Deepak Joshi on Friday, without saying why.

In a scrum with reporters at city hall Tuesday, Bowman again refused to go into detail about Joshi’s suspension but said he would recommend at Wednesday’s Executive Policy Committee that the suspension continue for 30 days.

EPC members say they have no idea what to expect as this is “unchartered” territory.

“We will be having some frank discussions,” said Councillor John Orlikow.

Joshi was named the city’s temporary top bureaucrat after its former CAO, Phil Sheegl, resigned in 2013.

Since then the city has been actively searching for a new CAO.  Members of that search committee met Tuesday to consider applicants.
