BATTLEFORD, Sask. – A young man accused of killing a Saskatchewan couple told police during an interview that the motive was to get money for drugs. A video of the interview with an RCMP officer was shown in court at the man’s first-degree murder trial in Battleford.

Genne and Teresa Nolin were killed in their home in Rapid View in October 2012. The accused, who was 17 at the time, is seen on the video saying that he and another teen first planned to use knives, but ended up using guns.

He also explains how he fired the first shot at Genne Nolin, while a 14-year-old accomplice shot the man’s wife and then fired again at Genne. He tells the officer it was his younger accomplice who decided which person each of them would kill.

The accused, who cannot be named due to provisions in the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder.
