NEAR SICAMOUS, B.C. – A day of snowmobiling ended in tragedy near Sicamous on Friday. A 49-year-old-man mistakenly drove off a 12 metre cliff in the Owl Head Recreation Area, east of Sicamous, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A helicopter from BC Ambulance Service, as well as a helicopter with Vernon Search and Rescue were on scene within a hour, but were unable to resuscitate the male,” according to a Sicamous RCMP news release.

The man’s identity has not been released. The BC Coroners Service and RCMP are investigating.

Vernon Search and Rescue say the area wasn’t off-limits, but is still extremely dangerous in the winter.

“It’s inherently dangerous. I cannot emphasize that enough,” says Pete Wise, who says they’ve had to rescue many injured snowmobilers from the area in recent winters. “These guys are going in these areas, and bad things are happening to them. There’s no getting away from it.”
