Blue Jays sign North Battleford, Sask. pitcher to minor-league deal

TORONTO – Another Canadian is looking to be part of the Toronto Blue Jays roster next year and he hails from Saskatchewan. Andrew Albers signed a minor-league deal with the club with an invitation to spring training, it was announced on Friday.

The left-hander, from North Battleford, Sask. played in South Korea last season after being released by the Minnesota Twins earlier this year.

Albers, 29, shone in his MLB debut for the Twins, throwing 8 1-3 scoreless innings against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 6, 2012. He ended the year 2-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 10 starts.

He was the Twins minor league pitcher of the year after going 11-5 with a 2.86 ERA for Triple-A Rochester. He had 32 walks and 116 strikeouts in 132 1-3 innings.

Last year, he went 6-13 with a 5.89 ERA with the Hanwha Eagles in South Korea, which was just slightly above the league average.

The Blue Jays recently added Canadians Russell Martin, Michael Saunders and Jeff Francis to their roster.
