Laval politician hires homeless to clear away snow

MONTREAL-  A city councillor from Laval-Des-Rapides has a novel plan to clean up after major snow storms in Quebec.

Pierre Anthian hired homeless men to shovel the small side streets that city workers didn’t have time to get to after more than 20 centimeters of snow fell on Montreal and the surrounding area.

“They are eager to contribute and I don’t see why they shouldn’t, especially if the city of Laval says they’d need 800 more city workers to get the job done in a timely fashion,” Anthian told Global News Thursday.

Anthian also works with Montreal’s homeless at Acceuil Bonneau mission on the island of Montreal.

The councillor is using his own salary to pay the workers.

Thursday, he shelled out 48$ to the two men who came and spent a couple of hours clearing snow behind Montmorency College.

Michel Leblanc spent several hours outside Thursday.

” You just have to get your hands on a shovel and want to have fun,”said Leblanc.

“It’s a great way to help, and feel wanted and if you can do it then it’s a good goal.”

Anthian will keep putting up the cash for the program until March, 2015.
