WINNIPEG – ‘Tis the season for university hoops around the University of Winnipeg with the 48th annual Wesmen Classic to tip off on December the 28th.  Once again eight teams are competing for the university title with the Wesmen and the Manitoba Bisons joined by Brandon, Calgary, Alberta, Regina, Lakehead and NAIT.

The Wesmen entered the holiday break with a two game win streak sitting in 4th place in Canada West with a 5-3 record.

“Winning three of our last four against Saskatchewan and UBC were monumental wins for us.” said Wesmen men’s basketball head coach Mike Raimbault.  “We’re definitely still trying to improve and get better and we have some guys this year that we’re asking to play a little bit bigger role than they have previously and that takes some time and we’re hopeful the best is yet to come.”

“It’s a big deal,” said 5th year shooting guard Travis Krahn.  “I mean in high school I never got the opportunity to do it.  So now that I’m playing with the Wesmen this is going to be my 3rd time doing it.  I’m pretty excited about it.  We haven’t been able to win it yet so hopefully we can do that this year, get a win at the Wesmen Classic.  That would be a huge jump going into the 2nd half of the season.”

The Junior Varsity Classic starts on Friday while the High School Boys Classic is set to begin on December 27.
