EDMONTON — In a winter city like Edmonton, people are always coming up with new ways to try to embrace the season.
So why not a good old fashioned snowball fight? Except the one that’s planned for Edmonton is anything but ordinary.
The Make Something Edmonton project is called #yegsnowfight. How it works is people who want to participate in the fight submit their phone numbers to the organizers. Then, when the timing is right and the weather conditions are perfect, organizers send out a text message with the location and time. The announcement will also be made on Twitter, using #yegsnowfight.
As of Nov. 13, more than 2,000 people had already signed up for the text message announcement.
“It’s growing by the hour,” said Jeff Chase, who organized the #yegsnowfight with Robin Mazumder after connecting through Twitter.
“I thought it was such a cool way to bring people together,” added Mazumder.
The snowball fight is a family friendly event. The organizers are looking for as many people as possible to take part.
They initially hoped 50 people would agree to come out, but now, in light of the huge response, they’re “definitely excited!”
“It’s just going to be a fun, safe opportunity to throw a couple snowballs,” said Mazumder.
“We don’t want it to be like a snowmageddon.”
Chase and Mazumber say Edmonton is the perfect city to host an event like this.
“Edmonton is an amazing city all year round; people want to get out and do stuff like this,” said Chase. “This is just one way to embrace the season and celebrate snow, which we’re lucky enough to have a lot of.”
“Edmonton is a city full of people who like to have fun, who are passionate about the winter,” added Mazumder. “So I think, no pun intended, but we have the perfect climate for something like this.”

The men say will give people a bit of notice before the snowball fight happens, likely a day or so. The event will most likely take place in the evening or on a weekend.
The campaign launched on Wednesday and the excitement has already been building on social media.
