Volunteers search for missing senior James Cuthbert

Natasha Pace/ Global News

MIDDLE MUSQUODOBOIT, N.S.- Family and friends of a missing 71-year-old man are now taking matters into their own hands. No one has seen or heard from James Cuthbert in one week and on Sunday, family members, neighbours and friends came together to search for him.

Tom Martin, his son-in-law as well as a retired detective with the Halifax Regional Police, organized volunteers to comb Old Guysborough Road starting near Middle Musquodoboit and travelling towards the Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

It’s a road Cuthbert would often travel.

“It’s quite possible we’re going to find something here so that’s why we’re doing it. We go in every area we search as if it’s a possibility,” Martin said.

Cuthbert left his home in the Head of Jeddore on the morning of October 26th. After stopping for gas at the Esso Station on Cole Harbour Road, he travelled to Dartmouth Crossing.

Martin said police are doing all they can and have hundreds of hours of video surveillance from around Dartmouth Crossing and the Burnside Industrial Park to go through.

Police have not been able to find Cuthbert or his car, a white 2012 4-door Toyota Prius with Nova Scotia license plate DTV 905.

“Cars don’t disappear, people don’t disappear. If you want a car to disappear, you got to make an effort to make it disappear. You can’t have a white Prius parked along the side of the 102 and have someone not see it. You can’t a white Prius parked in a parking lot of a shopping centre and have someone not see it. That concerns me,” Martin told Global News.

Martin said his father-in-law is in good health and the family does not think that is a factor in his disappearance.

“Jim is a very active, functioning, young 71-year-old man. Him and his wife, they just built their new retirement home. They’ve only been in it two years.”

Murray McLeod was one of a number of volunteers helping Martin and the Cuthbert family. He has lived next to James Cuthbert and his wife Marg for years.

“I feel so bad for his wife, you know, not knowing. And it just tears you apart,” McLeod said.

“I’m totally shocked because this is close to home. I can’t believe he’s missing. He’s a good guy and I know he’d be there looking for me if I was lost.”

Soney Wicks spent the day outside several stores passing out posters with Cuthbert’s picture on them. He was one of a number of people volunteering their time to help the  family get answers.

“It would be very important to me if my parents or someone in my family was missing, so I’m just helping out a friend,” Wicks said.

Cuthbert is described as a white male, 6′ tall, 170 lbs, with brown, slightly balding hair and a grey beard.

He has hazel eyes and wears rimless glasses. He was last seen wearing a brown leather bomber-style jacket and brown loafer shoes.
