Northlands determining future of Rexall Place

Watch above: The fate of Rexall Place is officially up for consideration. As Fletcher Kent reports, Northlands announced it’s working on a plan.

EDMONTON – Northlands has formulated a committee that has been tasked with gathering information and providing a recommendation on the future of Rexall Place.

As part of the process the Arena Strategy Committee will talk to community members and visit mixed-use facilities like Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

“We need a strategic plan that helps ensure the continued and enhanced contribution of Rexall Place and Northlands to the residents of our community,” said Laura Gadowsky, Chair of the Northlands Board of Directors.

The committee will deliver a report by April 15, 2015 which will include: facility and design recommendations, estimated operating, facility and site cost projections, construction plan and times, facility and site use plans, as well as community support for the recommendation.

“The opening of Rogers Place will change the competitive market place for Rexall Place,” said Tim Reid, President & CEO of Northlands.

“We need a short and long-term plan that meets Northlands’ objectives while identifying and assessing viable opportunities for the future use of Rexall Place and its site.”

The Edmonton Oilers are scheduled to move to Rogers Place Arena in downtown by the start of the 2016-2017 NHL season.
