71-year-old Nova Scotia man James Cuthbert still missing

HEAD OF JEDDORE, N.S. – Police and family members of 71-year-old James Cuthbert, from Head of Jeddore, N.S., continue to search for clues after he seemingly disappeared following a routine shopping trip to Dartmouth, but say there’s nothing new.

Cuthbert left his home on Sunday around 11:30 a.m. He stopped for gas at a service station on Cole Harbour Road and then went to Canadian Tire at Dartmouth Crossing. Video surveillance shows Cuthbert by himself in the store and he asked an employee if he could use the phone, and he left a brief voicemail message to his home.

“Jim leaves a voice mail saying he’s run into — and he names two people, and he’s going to have dinner with them so he’s going to be a bit late,” said his son-in-law Tom Martin.

The names were the first names of males. Cuthbert left the store at 12:36 p.m. according to investigators. He was driving a white 2012 Toyota Prius.

“He’s seen by a video camera in Dartmouth Crossing driving east on Commodore [Drive],” said Martin. But that’s where the trail ends.

Cuthbert’s son Robert says the timeline “was fairly short between him leaving the house and making that phone call.”

He said it’s difficult to imagine Cutherbert would have run into someone he hadn’t seen in years and made dinner plans “within minutes”.

James Cuthbert visited his 102-year-old mother at Ocean View Manor every second day. He was expected to be there on Sunday afternoon, but didn’t show up. He also didn’t show up at the arena where his grandchildren were skating.

“It’s very unusual,” said Robert. “He’s very scheduled and structured. It was expected that he would have gone and visited my grandmother and expected to see him at the rink.”

Robert said his father’s health was fine and so was his mental state, with no indication of Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia.

Martin got some good news Tuesday when the RCMP brought in a helicopter to aid with the search.

While police and friends continue to search for any clue to Cuthbert’s whereabouts the family says it’s been “absolute total torture”.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Halifax Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
