TORONTO – Even as he celebrated his Ward 2 victory Monday night, Rob Ford told supporters to get ready for November, 2018 – launching, it appears, a four-year mayoral campaign.
“If you know anything about the Ford family, we never, ever, ever give up,” Ford told his supporters at his victory party. “In four more years, you’re going to see another example of the Ford family never, ever, ever giving up.”
“We today have got to start working for November of 2018.”
Ford kicked off his mayoral marathon saying residents’ smallest problems were always his concern.
“That’s what we do. We take it on, we take a hands-on approach to the smallest problems. Because it is major to you,” he said.
Ford dropped out of the mayor’s race in September after he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
He said during his speech Monday that he and his brother decided they couldn’t give John Tory or Olivia Chow a “free walk.”
Tory was elected mayor Monday. But Doug Ford, who’d stepped into the race late, came in a much closer second place than many anticipated.
Doug Ford was much more subdued during his concession speech than his younger brother and congratulated Tory on his victory.
He refused to say afterwards whether he or his brother would run for mayor in 2018. Instead, Doug said he will “always be here for the great people of this city.”
“I can’t look forward that far. I just want to be here today and now. And I’m always here for the great people of this city,” Ford told reporters following his speech.
