WATCH: Deadly crash victim identified

VERNON – RCMP in Vernon have identified the victim of a deadly car crash Thursday morning.

RCMP say 33-year old Erin Rae Smith of Kelowna died when the vehicle she was driving was struck by a van.

It happened at 30th Avenue and 32nd Street at 1:15 a.m. in Vernon.

Her passenger, Lindsey Hauck, who is also in her 30s, remains in Kelowna General Hospital in serious condition.

Police believe the crash happened when the 37-year old driver of the van ran a red light.

They suspect alcohol played a factor in the crash.

The 37-year old driver from Vernon was taken into custody but has been released as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

Criminal charges may be pending.

Smith and Hauck were both on a break from the emergency ward at Vernon Jubilee Hospital where they worked as nurses.

The pair was on a coffee run for their co-workers at the time of the crash.

Vernon RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.
