Fire and emergency officials were called to the University of New Brunswick campus in Fredericton after reports of an explosion at a chemical engineering building on Monday morning.
Marilyn Calhoun, who works in the building, said she heard the explosion and called 911.
“I just heard a big bang and there was a small, not a huge explosion because you can see it didn’t affect the building,” she said. “But I knew there was something wrong so I called 911.”
The university later said a glass vessel exploded at a lab in the Limerick Pulp and Paper Research Centre on the second flood of the building.
Two research centre staff members received minor injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance.
“You have to understand, even if there’s a small glass flask that explodes, it’s going to be a bit dangerous,” Calhoun said.
By 11:15 a.m., fire officials said the building was contained but no one was allowed inside.
A hazardous materials team was cleaning up the spill in the lab and checking the ventilation system.
