Maritime cartoonist releases New Brunswick book

MONCTON, N.B. – Most people in the Maritimes are familiar with Michael de Adder’s edgy editorial cartoons. His sketches can be seen in daily newspapers across the Maritimes and Canada.

But in his latest book, de Adder has turned away from politics to take a lighter look at life in his home province of New Brunswick. His latest book called, “You might be from New Brunswick IF,” has people talking.

Global News sat down with de Adder to talk about where his career began,  more 30 years ago. It was in a classroom where de Adder doodled a not-so-flattering drawing of his teacher.

“He took my hand and slowly uncovered the image and he laughed so hard and it was the opposite reaction of what I expected and he actually took the drawing and put it up on his bulletin board,” he said.

That was the first of thousands of editorial cartoons he’s penned over an almost 20-year career. In New Brunswick and Nova Scotia newspapers, he uses his artistic talent and dry wit to, most often, poke fun at politicians.

“I realized that if you do political issues early on that it garnered more attention.”

But his latest collection of cartoons are not about politics, but about his home. He’s recently released a book with a comedic blend of caricatures that depict life in his native province.

“There are some cartoons that make you remember certain things from your childhood and there’s other cartoons that point a finger back at us in an easy-going, Maritime way.”

He released a similar book last year in Nova Scotia that has since topped best seller lists. He hopes the New Brunswick version will go over just as well.
