Crude video game depicts shooting of SkyTrain passengers

WATCH ABOVE: A violent video game is making the rounds on social media and sparking controversy. Linda Aylesworth explains why.

A new online video game with a local theme is raising eyebrows.

The game is called “Main Street Massacre” and lets players shoot at fellow SkyTrain passengers.

The main character of the game is a construction worker who’s frustrated with the recent SkyTrain delays.

The mission of the game is to kill everyone on the Main Street-Science World station platform.

Translink released a statement Wednesday morning to media outlets, asking them to refrain from “promoting” the online game. However, the statement from Translink referred to the online game as a “video clip.”

TransLink and the Vancouver Regional Construction Association are appealing to all news media in Metro Vancouver to refrain from promoting a video that appears to advocate violent behaviour against SkyTrain employees and passengers.

“Playing clips from this video over and over again, and informing the public of where they can view the video, is irresponsible and does not serve the public interest,” said Ian Jarvis, CEO of TransLink.

“The portrayal of construction workers in this video clip as violent individuals is highly inappropriate and does not reflect at all the professionalism of the construction industry,” said  Fiona Famulak, President of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association.

Earlier in the day, Transit Police had released a short statement, saying they are aware of the game and are reviewing it:

Metro Vancouver Transit Police have been made aware of a disturbing video game now available on the internet.

We are in the process of reviewing this video to determine if any police related issues come to light.

We will not be making further comment at this time.

Alexi Wildman of Wildman Industries Production created the game.

“When you roll up to Main Street Station half the thing’s closed down, it’s packed with people, and all I want to do is just get out of there and go home,” said Wildman who is a construction worker by day.

“It’s just to be provocative,” he added. “It’s just to get at it and be like ‘hey, you know?’ I mean, the way we’re doing things, the way we’re living in cities, the way our resources are being managed, it’s ticking people off.”

Wildman Industries Production has no online presence, and the game’s website is registered to a non-existent address on Vancouver’s Main St.

The online game’s website was registered on July 30, 2014.
