New animal protection laws come in effect Dec. 1

FREDERICTON, N.B. – The provincial government is introducing new regulations to ban 24-hour tethering of dogs and increasing penalties for other violations that risks an animal’s health and safety.

The new rules will come into effect on Dec. 1, after a 28-day review.

The province has been facing public pressure to strengthen animal protection laws. Right now, animals can be tethered outside indefinitely, as long as they have food and shelter. A rally was held to protest this law in April.

The new laws will restrict tethering of dogs from 11 pm to 6 am. It will also enable law enforcement officials to take action when an animal is improperly confined before the animal’s health is impacted.

Standards of care for farm animals are also being updated, as well as the standards for euthanizing animals.
