CALGARY- With temperatures reaching a scorching 31 degrees on Tuesday, Calgarians were buying anything they could get their hands on to try and stay cool.
Hardware stores said they had trouble keeping up the demand for things like fans, and companies that install air conditioners have been swamped with calls.
“Summer is my favourite season and I don’t want to not enjoy it because it’s hot in my house,” said Wendy Nevokshonoff, who picked up an air conditioner. “I want to be able to go outside and have fun, but then I want to be able to sleep at night.”
Of course, there are more economical ways to cool a house.
“Overnight I leave all the windows open and let the cool air in, and then in the morning before I go to work at 8 o’clock I shut all the windows, close all blinds,” explained homeowner Jodi Buhler.
Angels Café near Edworthy Park says they can barely keep ice cream in stock, and there are also empty shelves around the city where inflatable pools and sprinklers once sat.
Another popular way to beat the heat appears to be by drinking: a quick survey of liquor stores in Calgary showed that beer sales have been through the roof.
