TORONTO – Footage of two planes “almost colliding” at Barcelona Airport over the weekend has gone viral.
Uploaded to YouTube Sunday, the video shows a UTair plane making its final approach. As the Russian Boeing 767 plane is about to touch down, an Aerolineas Argentineas Airbus A340 taxis across its path.
The Boeing is “forced” to abort the landing as the pilot carries out a last-minute “go-around,” a common procedure that is practiced regularly by pilots.
The jet landed safely shortly after.
Barcelona-based aviation fan Miguel Angel Ramirez, who says he regularly films planes at El Prat Airport, said the incident was “one of the worst experiences [he] ever had.”
According to the Spanish publication El Mundo, the public body responsible for airports in Spain—Spanish Airports and Air Navigation—released a statement in response to the media frenzy triggered by the video and said there was never any danger of a collision as both planes were where they should be and there was sufficient distance between the two planes to carry out a landing.
The spokesperson added neither company has filed a complaint.
The video garnered attention on social media and already has over 1.8 million views on YouTube.
