Green your yardwork with new line of battery-powered tools

The EGO Power+ is the first cordless mower equivalent to a gas mower. EGO/Handout

TORONTO – If you’ve been holding off on mowing the lawn this year because you dread your old gas-powered machine and the noise and air pollution it causes, you’ll be happy to learn there’s finally a battery-powered solution that works.

You might scoff at the thought of using a battery-powered lawn mower, and I don’t blame you. I’ve tried many models of rechargeable mowers from reputable companies such as Ryobi, Black & Decker and Homelite and none of them have worked out. They either don’t hold a charge long enough, take too long to charge, or are too weak to cut thick grass, rendering them useless.

After fighting with a gas mower last summer, which constantly gave me a headache from the fumes and noise and ruined the environmentally-friendly lifestyle I try to lead, I knew I needed a better option this year.

My research led me to the EGO Power+ Mower, which claims to be the only cordless equivalent to a gas mower. I was skeptical of the claims and I reached out to the company.

“When it comes to lawn and garden equipment, consumers have long desired the convenience of battery power, but until now they had to compromise on power and performance. That’s why we developed EGO. It’s the powerful, no-compromise solution homeowners have been asking for,” said Joe Turoff, VP of sales and marketing for EGO.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Then they sent me the mower to test and I was immediately sold. To say this is a game-changer is putting it lightly.

Unlike most cordless or electric lawn mowers, this is a solid machine that can take a beating. I have a lot of ground to cover and the terrain of my yard is very uneven. There’s hills, rocks, branches — it’s a nightmare. This beast handled it with ease.

Powered by a 56-volt lithium-ion battery, which according to the company is 40 per cent more powerful than the closest competitor, I was able to continuously cut for close to an hour on a full charge (the company only promotes the battery will run 45-minutes on a full charge). Running out of juice isn’t an issue though, as the removable battery only takes 30-minutes to fully charge with the heavy-duty charger that comes with it.

The 600W, 3300RPM high-efficient magnetic DC motor is not only powerful, but extremely quiet. So quiet, in fact, that my neighbours kept coming over to chat with me while I was cutting the grass they were so in awe over it.

Other features of the EGO Power+ include a 20-inch cut capacity, LED headlight for dark areas, push-button starter, and the option of five different cutting heights. The mower also folds up in seconds and is extremely lightweight, making it easy to store or transport.

No pollution, headaches or gas cans sitting around the house — on top of happy neighbours — all make the EGO Power+ a worthwhile addition to any tool shed.

The EGO Power+ is available in Canada exclusively at Home Depot for a MSRP of $549.99. It comes with a removable battery, 30-minute charger, removable grass collection bag, side discharge chute and mulching insert.

EGO also makes a cordless blower, trimmer, and hedge trimmer. They all use the same 56-volt lithium-ion battery as the mower and all are equivalent to gas-powered models, making this one of the best eco-friendly lines of tools for all your yardwork this summer.
