EDMONTON – Over the course of a three-day safety inspection blitz on commercial vehicles in Edmonton, more than half of the vehicles stopped did not pass the test.
For the past three days, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has been inspecting commercial vehicles travelling on high-volume routes throughout the city.
Inspections focused on overweight loads, faulty equipment, securement of loads, over-dimensional loads, dangerous or stolen goods, and the condition of drivers.
In total, 251 vehicles were checked; of those, 52 per cent were declared out of service.
Here’s a breakdown of the three-day inspection:
- Vehicles Checked: 251
- Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Violations: 729
- Declared Out of Service: 132 (52%)
- Required Attention: 47 (19%)
- Pass: 72 (29%)
- Vehicles Towed: 11
- Summons: 108
- Warrants: 2
“This is a good reminder for drivers to inspect their trucks and trailers before leaving their company parking lots,” says Sgt. Kerry Bates with the EPS Commercial Vehicle Inspection Detail. “It’s the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle operates safely — so take the time to check for regular maintenance, that equipment works, and loads are properly secured and compliant with regulations.”
A similar check in the spring of 2013 inspected 364 vehicles. Of those, 42 per cent were declared out of service.
The compliance checks target commercial vehicles over 4,500 kilograms.
