Watch above: ice and humidity caused of a widespread power outage in Saskatoon on Monday
SASKATOON – A major power outage hit parts of Saskatoon on Monday morning, leaving most of the west side and downtown areas in the dark.
Saskatoon Light and Power says it appears the outage was caused by ice and humidity affecting a substation near 1st Avenue North and 33rd Street.
One person told Global News they heard a boom go off in that area when the power went out at 9:20 a.m.
City officials say five major substations and five minor substations along the transmission line were affected.
Crews began work to restore power after they walked the line to ensure there was no physical damage or debris on the transmission line.
Power was restored to all areas of the city by 10:40 a.m.
