SASKATOON – A Saskatoon woman is one of the Samaritan’s Purse members helping to fight a deadly Ebola outbreak in Liberia.

Taya Raine has been working in the West Africa nation for the last six years.

She used to be the water and sanitation program manager but that was put on hold when the Ebola outbreak started last month.

According to the World Health Organization, at least 121 people have died in Liberia and neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Raine, 29, told Global News that everybody’s talking about it and most people are very concerned with what is happening in the nation.

She has no plans to return home just yet and wants to do all she can to help.

“It’s preventable as long as you use proper precautions, and for now, I just want to be here and help a much as I can,” said Raine.

“I don’t feel as though it’s gotten so bad yet that I need to leave, which is great and I’m just praying that it remains that way.”

Scientists reported on Wednesday the source of the virus for the latest outbreak is not known, but that it was not imported from nearby countries.

Ebola is one of the most lethal viruses known to humans. There is no cure or vaccine and is fatal in 30 to 90 per cent of cases.
