APEX, B.C. — BC Safety Authority (BCSA) has determined the cause of a chairlift fire, which left a dozen people dangling in the air for an hour last Monday.

The blaze broke out in the hut where the motor engine was located.

BCSA says the main diesel drive motor that runs the lift had a failure.

It cannot determine what caused the engine to fail because the fire had destroyed the equipment.

James Shalman, Apex Mountain Resort General Manager, said the triple chairlift was built in 1981 but the motor was replaced four years ago.

Shalman said he is now dealing with insurers to see how much of the engine is covered.

The incident happened shortly after noon on March 31.
