Snow swallowing Delta Beach properties

DELTA BEACH, Man. – Cottage and homeowners at Delta Beach are amazed at the snow covering their properties.

“A lot of people have been saying they don’t think they’ve seen this much snow since before the flood of the century,” said Susan Ryan.

Just under 100 centimetres of snow has fallen in the area so far this winter, Environment Canada said, and winds are the main concern. High winds have taken the snowfall and sculpted massive hills, some as high as the houses.

Delta Beach is on the south shore of Lake Manitoba, about 110 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

“It’s amazing how much snow has piled up from the winds blowing in from the north,” said Jacques Sourisseau.

Hundreds of mature trees were torn down after the flood of 2011, which devastated the area, leaving homes vulnerable to winds and snow.

The RM of Portage la Prairie is monitoring the situation.

“It’s been a real challenge this winter, obviously, with all the high winds and increased snow,” said Reeve Kam Blight. “With the reduced vegetation and trees along the shoreline, it’s compounding the problem.”

Residents are hoping for a slow melt to reduce the risk of flooding.
