Mom of child with down syndrome starts blog to share her story

Tara McCallan’s life took an unexpected turn when she gave birth to a daughter with down syndrome.

“We found out she had down syndrome and for me, I just kind of needed to hibernate with her,” she said. “I just needed to work through that grief of what I thought my life was supposed to be like.”

McCallan founded the Happy Soul Project, a blog, as a way of expressing her thoughts on her life with daughter Reid, also known as “Pip.”

“It’s about living life with a grateful spirit, regardless of what you’ve been given,” she said. ” The life we have right now isn’t necessarily what we dream or what we hoped for, but it’s brilliant and it’s beautiful all the same and I just feel it needs to be shared.”

The Happy Soul Project has become a social media sensation, with over 6,000 Facebook friends, more than 2,000 Instagram followers and over 500 followers on Twitter, including Triana Landon.

“We’ve been following Tara’s blog for a few months ever since [my son] Thatcher was about two months old.  We found found out he had down syndrome when he was about five minutes old.”

Like Landon, McCallan initially struggled with the idea of raising a child with down syndrome, but soon realized Pip was nothing short of a blessing, and hopes to help others in her situation realize that too.

“Every Mama getting that diagnoisis is different, and I think that the main thing is to realize that it’s your story.  You need to either grieve it or you need to celebrate it,” she said.
