7 stunning images as aurora borealis light up U.K. sky

Residents in many regions in the U.K. were treated to a spectacular view of the northern lights on Thursday night.

Also known as the aurora borealis, the northern lights is a fantastical natural light display with fast moving light effects caused by particles charged by the sun colliding with particles in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Parts of Canada and the United States were also expected to be treated to the beautiful display.
