REACTION: Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s silver medal in Sochi

Canadians watched and waited to see if ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir would bring home the gold medal at the Winter Olympics again this year, but that was not to be.

After earning a world record high score in the free dance portion of the competition, their U.S. rivals Meryl Davis and Charlie White scored even higher to take first place.

Although Virtue and Moir skated a beautiful program, the pair dubbed “Canada’s sweethearts” walked away with a silver medal in Sochi.

Virtue and Moir were gold medal winners at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, but in the lead-up to this year’s Olympics a French report alleged the pair were the target of a backroom deal to ensure they wouldn’t take the gold.

Those suspicions were fuelled further on Sunday night, when judges scored the pair lower than was expected after what many considered a nearly flawless performance.

Canadians were quick to congratulate Virtue and Moir on Monday, but also speculate that why they didn’t get the gold many believe they deserved.
